Inticate Obscurities (2010-2011)

This project evolved from a reflection on memory’s structure. Delicate ramifications, similar in a way to neural junctures, create a labyrinth of paper layers, born through a laborious process of material removal. The result, with its semi-transparency, reveals while concealing what lies behind, inducing thus a suggestive comment on the formation of remembrance.

My intention was to shift the emphasis away from the material quality of the final result and for this reason I used paper, a common material which through its fragility imprints the wear of time but which, at the same time, offers infinite possibilities to create and transform the resurgent forms. Delicate and brittle as it is, with its infinitesimal neuron-like fibres that keep it in unity, it stresses the temporariness of a time-consuming struggle with the material.

Forms are not predefined; on the contrary, they emerge during a process of removal. One could argue that they are born through the dialogue between the qualities of full and void in something that resembles a drawing of shadows. The perforate surfaces tend to create a cover or veil that, crafted on the verge of obsession, it hides while leaving visible the layers below, suggesting a desire that oscillates between revelation and concealment. Form eventually evolves into a multitude of interconnecting layers that tend to wrap, leading ultimately to distortion and transformation (a reference to the processes of memory).
